They make it in 2x4 and 2x6 dimensions that would get wrapped in typical bunk style carpet. It would be practically rot proof and the spec sheets on the strength of the material is pretty decent.

I again agree with footer, although a 1x1 sst will hold the the same static load as a 2x4 it's dynamic characteristics are quite a bit different, it bounces a lot more.
While you're at it, you may want to think about replacing the wood railing and covering the exterior box beam. That's the wood that surrounds the outside of a floor joist structure. You don't actually have to replace it, but you can cover it with additional composite material.
