Jul 03, 2020· Plastic-Wood Decking Gap. When you are installing your deck, you should not allow your composite decking board to meet at both ends. You have to leave a space between the composite decks. This is to accommodate composite decking expansion gap. The essence of leaving this space is for the decking to expand and contract when they heat up.
To install composite decking with a hidden fastening system, start at the house by face-screwing the first board. Next, screw a hidden fastener clip into the groove on top of each joist. Then, slide the groove of the next board into the clips and tighten with a rubber mallet.
Composite decking will expand and contract in extreme climates. Don't leave a gap when two board ends butt together. Install double joists and use four clips, two per board, where you have a butt joint. Pro tip: Stagger the joints every other row so no two seams are next to each other.
As temperatures fluctuate, composite deck boards will naturally experience thermal expansion and contraction. That's why the board ends should never be installed tight against one another. There should always be a slight gap. How much of a gap? That will depend upon air temperature at the time of installation (Read this to learn more).
